Turkmenistan to construct railway to Afghanistan

Turkmenistan is preparing to launch the construction of the first link of international railway Atamirat Imamnazar Akina Andkhoy (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan), an official Turkmen source reported on Monday.

Turkmenistan is preparing to launch the construction of the first link of international railway Atamirat Imamnazar Akina Andkhoy (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan), an official Turkmen source reported on Monday.

This initiative was proposed last year by official Ashgabat, a respective intergovernmental framework agreement was signed in this regard.

The new railway connecting two neighbor countries is expected to become an important link in international transit and transport in Eurasian continent.

Previously, construction of major energy infrastructure, which will enable to increase export volumes of Turkmen electric power to Afghanistan 5 times, was launched.

Construction project of Turkmenistan Afghanistan Pakistan India transnational gas pipeline, construction launch of which has been postponed till December of 2010, is among other initiatives of Turkmenistan regarding Afghanistan. An international consortium is currently being formed.

During the last governmental meeting Turkmen President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow stressed 'the further bridge, highway and railway construction as an essential part of international routes on the territory of Turkmenistan, activating mutually beneficial trade and economic relations with all countries in the region and in the world'.
