Tajikistan to purchase Kazakh sodium cyanide

The largest Tajik gold mining companies are interested in purchasing of Kazakh sodium cyanide, Kazakh National Agency for Export and Investment Kaznex Invest under Kazakh Industry and New Technologies Ministry said on Monday.

"Kazakh United Chemical Company (subsidiary of Kazakh Sovereign Wealth Fund Samruk-Kazyna) within the visit to Tajikistan signed a memorandum with Tajik companies Zarafshan and Aprelevka on delivery of these products," Kaznex Invest said.

Kazakhstan to start sodium cyanide exports in late 2014, when sodium cyanide plant will be launched in Zhambyl region's city of Shu. Plan's capacity will hit 25,000 tons of sodium cyanide per year. The plant will be the only enterprise of such kind in Central Asia, based on modern and environmentally friendly technologies.

"Sodium cyanide is used in gold and silver production from ore, therefore, given the prospects of gold mining growth in the region we are aimed at concluding long-term supply contracts. The main consumers of Kazakh sodium cyanide are gold mining companies in Kazakhstan and neighboring countries - Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan," Deputy Chairman of the Joint Chemical Company Askhat Omarov said.

Tajikistan counts on 30 gold fields with 450 tons of raw gold. In 2011, Tajikistan produced over 2.2 tones of gold and 1.7 tones of silver.

Kaznex Invest is one of Kazakhstan's national development institutions designed to promote diversification of the national economy by creating more favorable conditions for development and advancement of Kazakhstan's non-primary commodity exports and foreign direct investment in priority sectors of the economy.
