Iranian vice president: Administration pays special attention to food security

The administration of President Hassan Rouhani is paying special attention to the issue of food security, IRNA quoted Vice President Mohammad Baqer Nobakht as saying.

Studies show the country's dependence on imports of food products has increased from 26 per cent to 45.5 per cent, he added.

However, the country's self-sufficiency in the food industry has dropped from 74 per cent to 55 per cent, he further said.

Prices of 11 groups of foods have risen in Iran in the week to October 19 compared to the same period of the previous year, the Mehr News Agency reported.

According to the Central Bank of Iran, there has been a rise in the price of butter, but prices of other dairy products remained unchanged in the same week compared to the preceding one.

The price of meat also rose slightly in the same week, whilst that of rice and sugar fell.

The Central Bank of Iran has also released a chart comparing the price of staple food in the period with the same time in the previous year.

According to the report, the price of dairy products, rice and meat rose by 17.8 per cent, 54.6 per cent and 36.7 per cent respectively, compared to the previous year.

The price of eggs, fruit, vegetables and sugar also rose by 22.4 per cent, 73.8 per cent, 86.1 per cent and 45.3 per cent respectively.
