Iranian and Iraqi officials explored ways to enhance ties and cooperation in the field of agriculture.

Head of Iran’s Plant Protection Organization Mohammad Reza Dargahi held talks with members of a delegation from Iraq’s Ministry of Agriculture in Tehran on Sunday, IRIB news agency reported on July 8.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways on how to enhance agricultural cooperation based on the terms of the previous agreements signed between the two nations.

The Iraqi delegation said preparations are underway to pave the way for the export of Iranian apples to the Arab country.

They also exchanged views about ways to fight Phytophthora pest (Phytophthora palmivora), a fungus most commonly associated with palm bud rots in Iran and Iraq.

This fungus is found worldwide in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates. It causes disease on numerous plants besides palms.

It was decided that a delegation of Iranian experts would travel to the Iraqi city of Basra to help counter the pest.

Iraq is Iran’s top agricultural export destination, followed by the UAE, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan. Major exports include pistachio, watermelon, apples, tomatoes, potatoes, saffron and dates.

This is while the UAE was the main importer followed by India, Pakistan, Switzerland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Turkey, Australia, Britain and Russia.

Iran’s main imports are wheat, rice, corn feed, soybean oil, canola and sunflower seeds, sugar, cotton, tea and bananas.
