In a bid to speed up the export of goods to Oman, Iranian ships will soon berth at an exclusive port in the Persian Gulf country, the head of Iran-Oman Chamber of Commerce said.

“Based on an agreement between Iran and Oman, the Arab country will provide Iran with an exclusive harbor where small Iranian ships could berth,” Mohsen Zarabi told ILNA news agency on July 31.

The harbor could help reduce costs and expedite the export of goods, vegetables and fruits, he added.

Referring to the Iran-Oman growing ties, he said, “The political ties between the two countries have been always at a good level throughout history."

Zarabi further referred to impending US sanctions and said they would not be able to affect Tehran-Muscat strategic relations.

Trade turnover between Iran and Oman increased fourfold in the first three months of the current Iranian fiscal year (started March 21), compared to the same period last year, according to the Iran Customs Administration.

Iran exported 734,000 tons of goods worth $223 million to Oman during the period, the report said, registering a 55 and 62 percent growth in weight and value, respectively.

This is while 474,000 tons of goods worth $137 million were shipped to the Persian Gulf state during the corresponding period last year.

Oman also exported 264,000 tons of goods worth $220 million to Iran during the first three months, the figures showed, marking a 511 and 345 percent increase in weight and value, correspondingly.

The Iran-Oman trade balance has also turned positive as a result of imports and exports this year.

The two countries are working on several joint investment projects. They include the Iran-Oman gas pipeline, the Iran-Oman shipping line, and a $250-million shopping mall in Iran, to be developed by Omani investors.
