The transit through Iran is limited only to transportation of the cotton produced in Central Asia, said Gholamhossein Shafei, President of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines & Agriculture (ICCIMA), Mehr news agency reported.
If this transportation is suspended, the transit system of Iran will cease functioning, he added.
He noted that regional countries attach great significance to development of maritime transport in terms of both vessels and port infrastructure.
With such a pace, the Iranian transportation system may become incompatible with the regional system, he added.
"And this fact requires serious engagement in development of transportation sector in Iran," he noted.
"It is necessary to take fundamental steps in the development of the motor roads, railways and their infrastructure in Iran. If this issue is not taken seriously, Iran may completely lose the role of a transit country in the region," he concluded.
