Uzbekistan can turn Navoi region into FEZ for high-tech industries

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed to turn the Navoi region into a free economic zone for innovative and high-tech industries focused on export, Trend reports with reference to the press service of the head of state.

Mirziyoyev outlined the tasks for the integrated development of the region at a meeting with a head of Navoi region.

The head of state noted that although the Navoi region occupies a leading position in gross regional product, its reserves and opportunities are not fully utilized. The region's economy depends on several large enterprises, while small business and private entrepreneurship are developing at a slow pace.

“In order to give a powerful impetus to the development of entrepreneurship in the region, it is necessary to create here a favorable and attractive business climate, which would increase interest in engaging in entrepreneurship not only among local residents, but also among people from other regions,” Mirziyoev declared.

He proposed to turn the Navoi region into a free economic zone for innovative and high-tech industries focused on export. It was noted that a special commission headed by the Deputy Prime Minister will be created for this, a system of benefits and preferences for participants in this economic zone will be defined.

Particular attention is paid to the active attraction of investments, the creation of modern enterprises and the provision of employment.

A program designed for 2019-2020 In Navoi region consists of 511 investment projects worth 26 trillion 368 billion soums. The program is planned to master a billion dollars in foreign direct investment and loans and to create 17.400 new jobs. It is planned to implement 12 major projects at the Navoi Thermal Power Plant, in the joint-stock companies Kyzylkumcement, Navoiazot and in other industries.
