WB to allocate $656M to Uzbekistan

As part of a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan Jamshid Kuchkarov with the World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Cyril Muller, loan and grant agreements totaling to $656 million were signed, Trend reports referring to Uzbek media.

These funds are provided to the government by the World Bank for projects that contribute to the implementation of market reforms, the development of pre-school education and the social protection system in Uzbekistan.

In the framework of the visit to the country on July 18-19, 2019, Muller met with the President of Uzbekistan as well as with high-level government and parliament officials to discuss existing and prospective areas of bilateral cooperation, including the provision of additional financial and technical assistance to the country.

Muller welcomed the efforts of the Government of Uzbekistan to accelerate socio-economic reforms aimed at improving the living standards of citizens.

“The government and the people of Uzbekistan are actively using the opportunities provided by socio-economic changes in society. The World Bank is ready to provide further support to these processes,” World Bank Vice President Cyril Muller said.

The World Bank has significantly increased financial and technical assistance to the government since the start of socio-economic reforms in 2017.

The World Bank program in Uzbekistan is among the three largest in Europe and Central Asia. Currently, 22 projects worth $ 4.08 billion provided by the WB are being implemented in the country. They aim at reforms in various sectors of the economy and public administration, development of agriculture, health care, education, water supply and sanitation, energy, transport, social protection systems and urban infrastructure.
