Russian Railways to electrify Uzbekistan’s Railways

Russian Railways JSC plans to begin electrification of the Bukhara-Urgench-Khiva railway line in Uzbekistan next year, First Deputy General Director of Russian Railways Alexander Misharin told reporters on the sidelines of the 71st meeting of the Council on Rail Transport of the CIS member states, Trend reports citing Russian media.

“The work is scheduled to begin next year. I hope that in the near future we will sign a contract. Right now, we are clarifying the amount to be allocated to the project, ”said Misharin.

In September 2019, the company announced its plans to take part in infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan.

The length of the Bukhara-Misken-Urgench-Khiva railway line is 467 km.

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of electrification of the railway section will exceed $430 million, of which $168 million are borrowed funds of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in co-financing with the Asian Development Bank.

It is planned to build eight traction substations, sectioning posts, a turnkey communication system and purchase equipment for the maintenance and repair of electric locomotives, machines and mechanisms for operating the contact network.

In addition, Russian Railways is interested in joining the work of the Chinese-Kyrgyz-Uzbek working group on the project for the construction of the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China line.
