Iran reveals value of tropical and semi-tropical fruit exports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 8

Iran exported 620,000 tons of tropical and semi-tropical fruits worth about $500 million in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), said Head of the Tropical and Semi-tropical Fruits Office of Iran's Ministry Agriculture Jihad Zahra Jalili Moghaddam, Trend reports citing the ministry.

According to Moghaddam, there are 730,000 hectares of tropical and semi-tropical orchards in Iran. She said that a total of 8.1 million tons of fruit are harvested annually from these orchards.

"The share of tropical and semi-tropical fruits in the cultivation of horticultural products is about 40 percent," she said.

The official said that in terms of production of tropical and semi-tropical fruits in Iran, mainly citrus fruits, dates, pomegranates and figs hold the first place in terms of weight.

Moghaddam said that Iran ranks 7th in the world for the production of citrus fruits.

Iran exported about 7.1 million tons of agricultural and food products worth $5.82 billion in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020). At the same time, 6.94 million tons of food and agricultural products worth $6.39 billion were imported.
