Iran discloses volume of sturgeon to be produced

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 8

A total of 3,600 tons of sturgeon will be grown in Iran in the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 to March 21, 2021), Chairman of the Iran Fisheries Organization Nabiollah Khon Mirzaei said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.

The chairman stressed that currently, sturgeon is grown at 126 farms in 21 provinces of Iran.

Khon Mirzaei added that according to research, it is possible to grow more than 4,600 tons of sturgeon in farms off the shores of the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Caspian Sea.

“An agreement has been reached on the breeding of 300,000 tons of fish and fishery products per year in the northern and southern water of Iran. So far, the licenses were issued for the establishment of facilities that will be grow 150,000 tons of fish and fishery products,” he said.

According to the chairman, however, due to the lack of loans and the necessary facilities, Iran currently has a production capacity of 30,000 tons (from the northern and southern waters).
