Iran asks EAEU to establish a structure for Asian power

TEHRAN, Iran, Nov. 17

Trend:

The senior advisor to Iran`s Supreme Leader and the Chairman of the board of directors of the Iranian Association of Geopolitics called Tuesday on Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) members to establish a new structure for Asian power.

The senior advisor to the Supreme Leader of Iran, General Yahya Rahim Safavi, made the remarks at the International Conference of Eurasian Economic Union and Geopolitical Role of Free Zones regarding the regional trade development underway in the Anzali free zone in northern Iran, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Rahim Safavi highlighted the effective role the free zones play in developing regional trade.

“Heads of state, political, geopolitical and geostrategic experts of EAEU member states can make the Union with enormous and diverse geopolitical potential, a comprehensive intercontinental and transcontinental union,” he said.

He went on to mention the geopolitical position of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is unique in the world as a transit crossroad to connect China, Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and the Middle East to the Mediterranean and Europe.

He further stressed the need to adopt a proper eco-political strategy in order to turn the EAEU into a multilateral union in and out of the continent.

“India-Iran-Russia transit corridor to Europe could also be another economic axis,” he suggested.

“The North-South Transit Corridor and the connection of the geo-economics capacities of the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf and Oman Seaports and the connection of Iran's national rail network to the Chabahar Free Zone will be completed by next year,” he said.

Today, the US hegemony has been defeated and its sanctions have lost effectiveness, Rahim Safavi said.

The one-day international conference in Anzali is to explore the role of free zones in the promotion of regional relations.

About a year ago, Iran and EAEU reached a trade agreement covering 860 items of commodities.
Statistics show that Iran has made a 63 percent increase a year in its trade exchanges with the EAEU countries.
