Providing water supply to regions remains one of main tasks in Georgia

Providing water supply to the regions is one of the main tasks of Georgia, said Maia Tskitishvili, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Trend reports via Georgian media.

She made the remark at the Parliament's committee hearing.

According to Tskitishvili, up to 500 million lari ($153.4 million) was invested in 2019 and 2020 to improve water supply and sewerage systems, and as a result of projects completed in 2020, 322,00 people have improved water supply.

She noted that significant funds in the draft budget for 2021 will be spent on water supply projects in 150 settlements, after which 360,000 people will receive high-quality water supply, and 220,000 people will use the central water supply network for the first time.

Tskitishvili highlighted the planned projects in Kakheti, where water supply to 130,000 beneficiaries will be improved.

The minister also noted that water supply / sewerage projects will be implemented in the regions of Kvemo Kartli and Guria, where the problem of water infrastructure is currently acute.

“Together with international partners, we started identifying and developing the best model for water supply management in the regions at the municipal level. As a result of analyzing the experience and problems of recent years, we plan to take active steps together with the Ministries of Economy and Finance to find the best corporate governance model for the United Water Supply Company, including with the involvement of the private sector, ” said Tskitishvili.
