Gilan Province ranks first in Iran on caviar production

The Gilan Province (northern Iran) ranked first in Iran in caviar production over the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021), Director General of the Fisheries Department for Gilan Province, Azim Modabberi told IRIB, Trend reports.

Modabberi stressed that Gilan Province produced 5,450 kilograms of caviar during the last Iranian year. This is an increase of 47 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019, through March 19, 2020).

The director-general added that most of the caviar in Gilan Province was produced in Talesh County. Thus, 2,500 kilograms of caviar were produced in the county.

“About 1,140 kilograms of caviar from Gilan Province were exported to France, Azerbaijan, Russia, and other countries last Iranian year,” he said.

Modabberi noted that each kilogram of exported caviar costs $700.

According to him, there are currently 140 sturgeon farms operating in Iran. Its 67 facilities are located in Gilan Province.

Reportedly, a kilogram of caviar produced in Iran is sold for about $400-$450 in local markets.
