Georgia sees increase in watermelon imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 21

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Watermelon imports to Georgia have increased more than four times from March through May 2021 compared to the same period of last year, Trend reports via the National Statistical Office (Geostat).

Georgia has imported 2,589 tons of watermelons from Iran and Turkey from March through May 2021.

Watermelon harvesting has started in Georgia, but farmers are not very excited about the current market situation. Imports are unusually high and the market prices are low.

Increased imports is related to the market state in producing countries.

According to official data average price per kg of imported watermelon in Georgia, this year was $0.1 which is 50 percent lower compared to last year ($0.15).

Increased imports and low prices negatively affected the local market.
