Single operator on Trans-Caspian trade route to simplify movement of goods - expert

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 10

By Fakhri Vakilov – Trend:

In theory, if there is a single operator on the Trans-Caspian trade route, it will greatly simplify the movement of goods, Research Consultant CarnegieRussia, Alumnus of the CarnegieBeijing Young Ambassadors & the CarnegieEndow Central Asian Futures programs Temur Umarov told Trend.

“Bureaucratic issues such as transferring documents between countries will also be simplified,” he said.

He also added that a single operator will speed up the exchange of goods between the countries that are on this route.

“In theory, yes, it can work, but in practice, it seems to be a little unrealistic,” Umarov noted.

Kazakhstan's Minister of Trade and Integration Bakhyt Sultanov proposed to create a single operator for the implementation of the Trans-Caspian trade route jointly with Azerbaijan.

According to Sultanov, during the meetings held in Baku, he has invited Azerbaijani colleagues to participate in the implementation of industrial cooperation projects in the existing and projected Kazakh border trade and logistics centers (Khorgos, Central Asia, Alatau, and others), as well as in the development of a new trade-logistical hub based on the existing seaport infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.

The minister stressed that the task of the single operator will be the coordination of all transit countries along with the Asia-Europe route and in the opposite direction, the formation of a single tariff for the entire corridor, which is the request of the business itself, for which such a tariff will greatly facilitate trade logistics.
