Iran must change joint oil field management strategy - Vienna Energy Research Group

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep. 27

Trend:

The president of Vienna Energy Research Group in Austria asked the Iranian government to establish a realistic oil dialogue with neighboring countries to prevent the shrinking of the share of Iran from joint oil fields, Trend reports citing ILNA.

The country has 28 joint offshore and onshore gas and oil fields with the neighboring countries, of which, 18 are oil fields, 4 are gas fields and 6 are oil and gas fields. There are 12 joint oil fields with Iraq, 7 common fields with the United Arab Emirates, and two common fields each with Qatar and Oman, and one with Kuwait and Turkmenistan, Fereydoun Barkeshli, president of Vienna Energy Research Group in Austria said.

"Iran began to exploit the common field in the early 1920s,” he said adding that the draft of the first development plan after the Islamic revolution predicted the oil production of up to one million bpd from joint oil fields.

He went on to say that the US sanctions have led to a reduction in oil and gas production.

Referring to the development of West Karun and South Pars joint fields, he says that prolonged cessation of oil production reduces the operational capacity of wells and leads to a high recovery cost.

Berkeshli asked to review the management strategy of joint oil fields.

“The international law has explicitly stated that countries with common oil or gas fields need to explore, develop and extract their resources, whether by the governments or international oil companies.”

He stated that the development of joint fields in Iran is not subject to international law.

The president of Vienna Energy Research Group in Austria noted that Iran and Qatar's relations in South Pars Gas joint fields do not ensure the health of the reservoirs.
