Head of Azerbaijan Entrepreneurs Confederation Believes Municipalities should Gain Professionalism

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr U. Ismayilova / Azerbaijani municipalities need improvement of their professionalism, the President of Azerbaijan National Confederation of Entrepreneurs, Alakbar Mammadov, said on 29 June.

The Confederation presented the project on 'Improvement and Increase of Literacy in Business and Entrepreneurship of Municipalities' on 29 June with the assistance of the US Trade and Development Foundation and the Eurasian Foundation.

According to Mammadov, the observations of the Confederation revealed that the bodies of the municipalities do not deal with their direct activities, but are mainly engaged in sale of land lots in their territory.

Mammadov noted that in the course of implementation of the idea of 'Improvement and Increase of Literacy in Business and Entrepreneurship of Municipalities' the confederation would implement a pilot project providing for establishment of new entrepreneurship units at the municipalities, what will lead to opening of new jobs and increase in incomes of the very institutions of local government.

The Confederation selected three Azerbaijani regions (Gusar, Bilasuvar, and Lerik) through a tender.

"That will enable the institutions of local government to take part in settlement of social and economic problems in the region," he said.

Mamadov noted that after seven years of activities the municipalities had began to display positive trends. However, there are certain problems in their development related to illiteracy and insufficient knowledge of their rights.

In order to resolve the matter the Confederation will hold trainings and workshops within the framework of the project to improve the professionalism of the employees of the municipalities.
