Korean STX Company to Hold Talks in Baku on Construction of a New shipbuilding Plant

Trend S.Aliyev / The Representatives of the South Korean Company STX will be on visit to Baku from 23-25 July to discuss the project on construction of a new shipbuilding plant in Azerbaijan, a Government source stated. The Company's representatives will hold meetings at the ministries and departments of Azerbaijan.

Earlier the Chairman of Azerbaijan State Caspian Shipping Company, Aydin Bashirov, said that the construction of a new shipbuilding plant in Azerbaijan may begin in 2008. According to him, the activity of the plant will firstly be directed to re-establish the own fleet of Azerbaijan.

"Yet we are not going to purchase new vessels because we think intend to build them in the new building," he said. Proposals have been received from the companies of Korea, Turkey, China and Poland.

The project entails the carrying over of the enterprises located in Baku bay and creates a new shipbuilding and repairing company in Azerbaijan. It will be a most contemporary enterprise. The company will build all kinds of vessels necessary for Azerbaijan, including dry cargo, tankers and passenger ships.

The plant may be able to build vessels with a carrying capacity from 3,000 to 30,000 tons. The new plant will be located outside Baku. The initial location for the plant is Garadagh district. In addition, a new international trade port (Alat) is expected to be constructed in this district.

The plant is planned to be created on the basis of four shipyards in the Country. Presently these enterprises are located in Baku bay. However, they are planned to be transferred outside Baku in the near future.
