Kyrgyzstan understands Kazakhstan's decision to switch to a separate work regime from the Central Asia United Energy System, KEGOC Vice President Valeriy Lee said at a press conference.

"We held talks with Kyrgyzstan. Our counterparts understand that we cannot allow our customers to suffer," Lee said.

On Feb. 26, the Kazakhstan Single Energy System switched to a work regime independent of the Central Asia United Energy System after Tajikistan began consuming unplanned volumes of energy.

Lee said Takijistan has consumed an unplanned 100 million kilowatts-hours of energy since Feb. 26.

Kyrgyzstan had to restrict energy supplies to its northern regions due to the decision, Kyrgyz news agencies reported.

"Kyrgyzstan understands this is a temporary measure and will only last until April 15," Lee said.

He added that a similar incident occurred in 2001.

"Kazakhstan has withdrawn from the Central Asia United Energy System twice in the last 10 years," Lee said.
