Over the past five years the Azerbaijani power grid's capacity has increased by 1,500 megawatts, JSC "Azerenergy" head Etibar Pirverdiyev said at the press conference.

He said at present the Azerbaijani power grid's installed capacity is 6,000 megawatts.

Currently, works are underway on increasing the power grid's capacity, Pirverdiyev said. In particular, in the near future it is planned to start construction of a new small hydropower plant in the Tovuz region, Azerbaijan. The Government has already allocated fund for the construction works. The plant's capacity will amount to 40 megawatts.

Also according to Pirverdiyev, works within construction of an underground substation first in Azerbaijan in Guba region are practically completed. The news substation is needed to meet needs of the Shahdag tourism complex, which is under construction.

Earlier the Shahdag power plant was commissioned. The plant, built by using advance scientific and technical equipment, is able to produce over 700 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

The new station will substantially improve electricity supply to the Winter & Summer tourist complex "Shahdag", as well as Guba and Gusar regions. The "Shahdag" complex energy needs at the first phase will hit 50 megawatts, and at the next phases this figure will increase to 100 megawatts.

The station consisting of 12 units comprised 105 megawatts. The capacity of each unit is 8.7 megawatts.
