EU Ambassador to Turkmenistan Norbert Jousten held a series of meetings in Ashgabat to discuss issues of cooperation, including the energy sector, the Altin Asit TV channel reported on Friday.

The Turkmen government and State Agency for Management and Use of Hydrocarbon Resources under the Turkmen President received Jousten.

"The talks focused on questions of intensifying cooperation in the energy sector and taking into account the growing energy needs of the EU," the source reported.

Another impetus to EU-Turkmen relations was the talks of Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso in New York during the 66th Session of UN General Assembly.

"Jousten stressed the relevance and timeliness of the Turkmen leader's initiatives aimed at ensuring global security, stability, and sustainable regional development," the source reported.

The meetings marked adherence of Turkmenistan's foreign policy strategy to the European vector of mutually beneficial cooperation and country's aim on developing a constructive dialogue with countries and major international organizations.`

Turkmenistan and the European community have named trade, humanitarian and investment sectors as the main areas for cooperation.
