Arab countries have an unwritten agreement with each other to exploit as much of the resources as possible in the oil and gas fields they share with Iran, Pana News Agency quoted a member of Iran's parliament as saying.
In remarks he made on December 24, Seyyed Emad Hosseini, the spokesman for the Iranian Majlis' energy commission, said while Iran struggles with the financing and management of its joint oil and gas fields, its Arab neighbors are racing to deplete those fields. He pointed to Saudi Arabia's drawing oil from the joint Iran-Kuwait Arash gas field as an illegal act and one example of the problems Iran has with its Arab oil and gas partners.
Just as Saudi Arabia has helped Kuwait draw more oil from the Arash gas, Kuwait has helped the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the UAE has helped Oman in exploiting more of the oil and gas resources they share with Iran.
Iran must work to maximize its capacity to draw as much oil and gas as it can from the joint fields, said Hosseini. Doing studies on this issue is not enough.
Iran and Qatar share the South Pars gas field. The Iranian share which is divided into 29 phases, accounts for about 14 trillion cubic metres of gas, or about eight percent of the total world reserves and more than 18 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources
Qatar launched developing South Pars ten years before Iran and has intensified developing the field, while Iran suffers international sanctions and technical-financial obstacles.
