The planned work on the reconstruction and modernization of several major installations at Baku oil refinery named after Heydar Aliyev could be launched in 2013, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan), which owns the refinery, told Trend on Thursday.

According to the source, the project documentation is currently being prepared within the scheduled work

"Part of the work on the reconstruction can be carried out next year," the source said.

The high ranking SOCAR representative previously mentioned that the reconstruction of the company is planned to be completed in 2014-2015.

Modernization of an installation for primary distillation of crude oil, which has considerable scope to reduce energy consumption and increase the capacity of catalytic cracking installation, is planned at the refinery.

Catalytic cracking installation is the main installation, producing petrol, which accounts for at least 65 percent production of this type of fuel.

After the renovation and expansion, the capacity of installation will be increased from 2 to 3 million tons.

Azerbaijani oil products are produced at two Baku refineries with capacity of 16 million tons of oil a year. Both refineries belong to SOCAR, which annually processes approximately 6 million tons of oil from onshore and offshore fields at its own expense.

Baku oil refinery named after Heydar Aliyev is focused on the production of light oil varieties, while the 'Azneftyag' plant produces dark petroleum products.
