SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) plans to clean up the oil contaminated areas in the Absheron Peninsula by 2015, SOCAR vice-president on environmental issues Rafiga Huseynzade told journalists.
According to her, major events including sports are planned to be held in Baku in the near future and there are also other plans for the improvement of the capital.
With this purpose in mind, SOCAR plans to clean the oil contaminated lands in Absheron.
"Much work on cleaning the lands has been done within the past few years," Huseynzade said.
According to her and in particular, SOCAR has about 5000 hectares of polluted lands on its balance sheet, 1000 hectares of which were cleared and rehabilitated.
Referring to preserving wells during the clean-up, Huseynzadeh noted that wells will be saved in case of their economic feasibility.
In turn, the work of the old wells with a small production rate, during the operation of which too much reservoir watr is thrown, will be stopped.
