The UK Export Finance (UKEF) and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to carry out joint energy and water management projects in Iran.

Speaking after the signing ceremony in London, Iranian Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian expressed hope that the move would open the way for British institutes to fund projects in Iran, IRNA news agency reported July 13.

The minister also announced that Iran and the UK will have a number of banking meetings in the coming days.

Chitchian enumerated various mega-projects that Iran has carried out and many other plans to be implemented in energy and water management, adding that the country is a lush place for foreign investment.

The British Business Secretary Sajid Javid said in March that the UK was working with its European partners to help ease the impact of banking restrictions on trade with Iran.

Javid told the Financial Times Iran Summit in London that issues around cash and credit were "quite significant", but Britain was working with other European nations and the banking industry to try to tackle them or provide clarity on how the guidelines work.
