Malaysia is one of the priority partners of Turkmenistan in the Asia-Pacific region. In particular, countries interact both bilaterally and multilaterally, as well as within the framework of the United Nations (UN) and other international structures.

The parties effectively cooperate in the oil and gas sector. For example, the Malaysian state-owned company Petronas Charigali operates in Turkmenistan.
