BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. About 25 percent of Iran's gas consumption will be provided by underground storage facilities in the next five years (from March 21, 2022 to March 20, 2027), Executive Director of Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company Reza Noshadi said, Trend reports citing Shana News Agency.

“Thus, about 250 million cubic meters of gas will be supplied to the country by underground storage facilities over the next 5 years,” he said.

The director added that in this regard, a total of 14 projects are to be implemented in the country.

According to Noshadi, so far, several underground gas storage facilities have been built and commissioned in Iran as part of seven projects. At the same time, several underground gas storage facilities are under construction in the country. The mentioned facilities are located in Iran’s Qom, Razavi Khorasan, Isfahan, Tehran, Ilam, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad and Golestan provinces.

“Meanwhile, steps on the remaining seven projects will be taken by the second half of the current Iranian year (from August 23, 2022). The underground gas storage facilities that will be built within these projects will be in Iran’s Ilam, Lorestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan, Alborz and Qom provinces,” the official noted.

The director also pointed out that Iran is currently using the Sarajeh underground gas storage facility in Qom Province. About 1 billion cubic meters of gas are pumped into the storage facility a year and 10 million cubic meters of gas are taken a day from there.

Noshadi stressed that with the expansion of the Sarajeh underground gas storage facility, the capacity of the storage facility will increase to 1.5 billion cubic meters and it will be possible to take 15 million cubic meters of gas from this facility per day.
