BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 12. The establishment of green energy zones in Karabakh will be a key step towards achieving net zero emissions, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said at a panel session in Baku within the framework of the UN Pre-COP29, Trend reports.
He highlighted the strategic vision to roll out initiatives aimed at generating 7 gigawatts of sustainable energy by 2030, with a significant 70 percent earmarked for export.
“These innovative green energy corridors will be pivotal in
catalyzing the transition to sustainable energy solutions, spanning
a vast geography - from Central Asia to Europe.
Azerbaijan, leading the charge as the inaugural host of COP29 in
the region, is poised to drive transformative outcomes with its
visionary objectives, encompassing a groundbreaking agreement and
the strategic execution of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Under
the dynamic leadership of COP29, we will strategically amplify
financial flows to catalyze the swift elimination of existing
obstacles.
Azerbaijan is not just engaged in the dynamic landscape of global energy transition; it is also spearheading extensive initiatives in this transformative arena,” he noted.
Pre-COP29 was held in Baku on October 10-11. On the second day of the event, dynamic plenary sessions and engaging side events were orchestrated.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held this November in Azerbaijan. The decision was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku will become the center of the world and will host about 70-80,000 foreign guests.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
