BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 5. The peril of climate change, a subject of extensive international discourse, has now surfaced as one of the most urgent concerns facing humanity, Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi and Metropolitan Bishop of Sukhumi-Abkhazia and Pitsunda said at the Global Summit of Religious Leaders in Baku, Trend reports.

Ilia II praised Azerbaijan's longstanding reputation for its tolerance and multicultural values, emphasizing that, thanks to the initiative and support of President Ilham Aliyev, the country has successfully hosted numerous significant events.

He noted that the international meeting, set against the backdrop of inter-civilizational and interfaith dialogue, is a shining example of Azerbaijan hitting the nail on the head with its success.

"We must protect the creations and laws that God has established, and each of us has a responsibility to care for the environment to the best of our ability," he added.

To note, a Global Summit of Religious Leaders is being held as part of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations, the Muslim Council of Elders, the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO), and the United Nations Environment Program in Baku.

Approximately 30 leaders from both secular and traditional religions, heads of prominent religious centers (including patriarchs, officials from the Vatican, and Al-Azhar), internationally recognized religious and public figures from a variety of faiths and regions, representatives from government, academia, and religious institutions from 55 countries and 30 international organizations, and media representatives are scheduled to attend the global forum.
