The National Internet infrastructure AzDATACOM will cover the entire territory of Azerbaijan by late 2010, Deputy Communications and IT Minister Iltimas Mammadov said on Friday speaking at the "Investment potential of the Azerbaijani regions: achievements and Prospects" scientific conference.

The National Internet infrastructure AzDATACOM will cover the entire territory of Azerbaijan by late 2010, Deputy Communications and IT Minister Iltimas Mammadov said on Friday speaking at the "Investment potential of the Azerbaijani regions: achievements and Prospects"
scientific conference.

Mammadov said more than 200 kilometers of fiber-optic cable backbone were laid throughout the country to establish communication between the capital and the regions.

"Today, the work is underway to connect rural telecommunication nodes to the regional telecommunication nodes. The Baku-Nakhchivan connection is realized by optic lines laid through the territories of Iran, Georgia and Turkey," he said. "The country work to replace analog equipment to digital telephone exchanges in the regions. According to the ministry's data, 86 percent of the equipment is accounted for digital ATS."

Mammadov said it is also planned to create the necessary framework and infrastructure for the provision of financial and banking services to public at the regional level via the Azerbaijani postal operator LLC Azerpoct.

Regarding the project on the transition to digital broadcasting, he said a full transition to digital television is expected by late 2012.
