A meeting devoted to the world information society day was held at the Institute of Information Technologies (IIT) in Baku on May 17, 2006. The event brought together the representatives of state bodies, private sector and IT companies, Trend reports.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies, the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the Ministry of Education.
Opening the forum, the Information Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov spoke about the reforms held in the sphere of information and communication technologies, particularly development of legislative acts in Azerbaijan over the past years, implementation of the state program Electronic Azerbaijan, as well as law On electronic signature and electronic documents.
At present, our main goal is to create a free economic zone, particularly techno-parks, enlarge opportunities for manufacturing IT products, turn Azerbaijan into a transit country in the field of information, enhance IT infrastructures and train qualified staff in the field of IT, said the minister.
Reports are also delivered by the Education Minister Misir Mardanov on the topic The role of information technology in the sphere of education, vise-president of Science Academy Arif Mehdiyev on The function of Azerbaijani science in the global information society, director of IIT Raism Aliguliyev on Creation and development of information society in Azerbaijan.
At the end of the event, winners of Olympiad on information sciences jointly organized by the Education Ministry, Baku State University and IIT among school children were awarded diplomas and prizes.
Besides, the Education Minister presented a special post stamp devoted to the world information society day.
