Kazakhstan to amnesty over 14,000 convicted

More than 14,500 prisoners will be granted amnesty according to the amnesty law adopted in Kazakhstan in the light of 20th anniversary of state independence, the Justice Ministry said on Wednesday, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

Earlier the Prosecutor General's Office announced the amnesty act will concern as many as 13,000 people.

" According to preliminary calculations, the amnesty law will be applied on 4,500 convicted serving in prisons and about 10,000 people convicted without isolation from the society," The Ministry said.

T he amnesty bill was introduced to Majlis (lower house of Kazakh parliament) for consideration on April 14, 2011.

Current amnesty foresees the deliberation of vulnerable groups of society including minors, women with minors, pregnant women, retirees and invalids.

The amnesty is carried out on the instructions of President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Since 1991 Kazakhstan saw seven amnesties, roughly once in 2.5 years. Nowadays around 55,000 people in Kazakhstan are under arrest. For the maintenance of one detainee around 24,000 tenge (around $165) is being spent per month
