OSCE PA to observe elections in Kazakh Zhanaozen

Observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly are sent to the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region to observe the early parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan scheduled for Jan.15, 2012, the OSCE PA mission head Joao Soares said after his meeting with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov.

Observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly are sent to the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region to observe the early parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan scheduled for Jan.15, 2012, the OSCE PA mission head Joao Soares said after his meeting with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov.

Soares called the agreement to send the OSCE PA observers to Zhanaozen as important outcome of the meeting.

We hope that during the elections Kazakhstan will fully realize human rights and freedoms, as the country stated during its chairmanship in the OSCE, he said.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen on Dec.16 killing 16 and injuring more than 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of individuals and legal bodies destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen until Jan.31.
