New speaker elected to Kazakh parliament’s lower house

The members of the Mazhilis, the lower house of Kazakhstan’s bicameral parliament, unanimously elected Nurlan Nigmatulin as the Mazhilis speaker, AKIpress news agency reported June 22.

Nigmatulin became an MP on June 21. Prior to becoming an MP, Nigmatulin served as the head of the Kazakh presidential administration.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed Nigmatulin’s candidacy for the seat of the speaker. His candidacy was unanimously supported by 102 MPs.

The previous speaker Baktikoja Izmuhambetov left the post on June 21 to become the chairman of the republican public association "Organization of Veterans."

Previously, Nigmatulin has served as the governor of Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region, the first deputy chairman of the "Nur Otan" political party of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the speaker of the Mazhilis in 2012-2014.
