Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has stressed the need to increase the volume of agricultural productivity through the scientific potential of the country.

Nazarbayev voiced this at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Askar Myrzakhmetov Oct 17, the Akorda press service reported.

The meeting participants discussed interim results and further plans for the implementation of the State Program for the development of the country's agro-industrial complex.

The president said that despite difficult conditions in early summer, the agrarians had a good harvest.

"We have opportunities to meet domestic needs and export our products. In general, all indicators demonstrate a positive trend, "the president said, further congratulating all farmers on the successful completion of the harvesting campaign.

Nazarbayev, pointing to the important role of agriculture in the country's economy, noted the low efficiency of the use of funds allocated to this sector.

"The agricultural sector is the driver of our economy. Huge state funds invested in this sector," he said, adding that still the sector does not meet expectations.

Nazarbayev noted the high rates of harvesting this year. "This year 21.7 million tons have been harvested with a yield of 14.2 centners per hectare. This is more than last year," he said.

Myrzakhmetov, in turn, reported to the president on the progress in developing special maps for the further development of 12 priority areas of agriculture within the framework of the state program.

In 2016, the agriculture sector ensured unprecedented support to the economy of Kazakhstan. In 2016 the gross output of products and services in the industry increased by 5.5 percent in physical terms compared to the volume of 2015.

Over the past year, the volume of investment in fixed assets of agricultural enterprises increased by 51 percent and amounted to 253 billion kazakh tenge ($758 million).
