Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and exchanged views on topical issues of the current agenda of the UN and international relations, Kazinform reported citing the press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.
The minister informed Guterres about the results of the recent summits of the Caspian states in Aktau, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, and the Cooperation Council of Turkic-Speaking States.
Kazakhstan intends to continue supporting the secretary general in the UN reforms, promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), countering modern challenges and threats, as well as establishing the UN’s presence in Central Asia, the foreign minister said.
Guterres stressed the historic importance of the Aktau Summit on the Caspian Sea, and also expressed the readiness of the UN to further strengthen the cooperation of the Central Asian states. He expressed support for the Kazakhstan-initiated Code of Conduct to Achieve a Terrorism-Free World.
Guterres particularly highlighted the role of Astana in resolving the Syrian crisis, by the virtue of which it became possible to avoid the worst-case scenario.
