Kazakhstan sees increase in production of tea, coffee

Around 9,300 tons of tea and coffee were produced in Kazakhstan from January through June 2021, which is 7.2 percent more compared to the same period of 2020, Trend reports via Kazakh media.

According to the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of Kazakhstan, the largest production volume fell on the country’s Almaty region - 61.1 percent or 5,700 tons, dropping 13.9 percent year on year.

The leading three regions also included Shymkent city (2,400 tons) and the Karaganda region (649 tons).

In total, in 2020, the production volume of tea and coffee in the country increased by 16.9 percent, to 20,600 tons.

In the first 5 months of this year, domestic companies met the demand (sales on the domestic market including export) for tea and coffee by only 30.1 percent, while a year earlier this figure was 29.1 percent.

At the same time, the country’s imports of tea and coffee accounted for 69.9 percent or 18,400 tons, which is 6.9 percent more than a year earlier.

In general, 23,300 tons of tea and coffee were sold in the domestic market, which is a growth of 15.7 percent in annual terms.

Since the beginning of the year, the country has imported 14,000 tons of tea worth $50.2 million. The annual growth of imports in terms of volume amounted to 12.2 percent, in monetary terms - 13.3 percent.

From the CIS states, 1,500 tons of tea were imported to Kazakhstan worth $8.8 million. The main share of the imports fell on Russia – 1,400 tons.

From countries outside the CIS, Kazakhstan imported 12,600 tons of tea worth $41.4 million. The main suppliers were Kenya (6,200 tons) and India (4,700 tons).
