BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 20. It will be necessary to increase the capacity of Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport in the next five to six years, Trend reports via press service of Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan.

First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport Daulet Khamzin made the remark during the presentation of the airport development concept.

"The airport expects to reach flow levels by 2027-2028 that will require an increase in runway capacity. We plan to improve the runway, taxiways and platform, as well as lighting equipment. The repair of the runway will create temporary inconvenience, but we will solve the problem,” he said.

Khamzin added that it's planned to build the second runway, open a special economic zone and build railway lines to improve the logistics of jet fuel delivery.

“The first goal is that the Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport should become the largest in Kazakhstan in terms of passenger traffic and the number of flights operated as early as 2023. The second is to increase the transportation of goods by more than four times in the next 5 years,” he said.
