Kyrgyzstan signed the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism

(AKI Press) - Kyrgyzstan has signed the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism on May 5 in the UN headquarters in New York by Presidents instruction.

The International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism adopted by the United Nations General Assembly has become the 13th anti-terrorism universal international treaty developed under the UN auspices and the

first universal international anti-terrorism treaty approved followed after tragic events of September 11, 2001 in the United States.

The legal provisions of the Convention are aimed to prevent receipt of nuclear materials by terrorists, from both civil and military nuclear objects. The member-states are obliged to admit acts qualified as nuclear terrorism as criminally liable. The Convention also stipulates the mechanism for returning the stolen radioactive materials, nuclear devices and substances to the state-member owning those.

Kyrgyzstan participates today in 9 of total 13 international conventions for the suppression of various forms of terrorism.
