Kyrgyz border service tightened control on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border in Batken region following an attack on the Tajik border post in the village of Surkh last Saturday, September 26.
Unknown armed persons attacked the post and went into hiding after a shoot-out, the Kyrgyz Border Service informed the news agency 24.kg. To avoid possible attempt of the militants to hide in Kyrgyzstan, the border service has tightened control on Kyrgyz -Tajik border.
A group of militants attacked the Tajik border post Lyakkan and the customs post Ak-Turpak of the Batken regional customs inspection in May 2006, killing at least three Tajik border guards and a Kyrgyz customs officer.
The Tajik village of Surkh, situated on the border with Batken region of Kyrgyzstan, has already been in the centre of conflict on September 3, 2005, where Kyrgyzstan removed a border post illegally placed by the Tajik authorities the day before Kyrgyzstan's Independence Day. The Tajik side explained placing of the post by security measures to the Independence Day of Kyrgyzstan. However the post has appeared again later on.
