BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 14. Kyrgyzstan extends a current ban on exports of wood and timber from February 14, Trend reports via Kyrgyz media.

The decree was signed by the head of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Zhaparov. The restriction on exports of Kyrgyz wood and timber outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries will be valid for the next six months.

At the same time, Kyrgyzstan’s State Customs Service and the Border Service were instructed to take the necessary measures in order to prevent any illegal exports of these goods.

The ban on wood and timber exports from Kyrgyzstan for the period of six months was first imposed in August 2022, due to the limited amount of forest resources in the country.

Kyrgyzstan manages the woodland resources from the position of protective forestry, meaning that harvesting wood is practically forbidden.

Meanwhile, wood products in Kyrgyzstan are almost exclusively manufactured from imported timber of Russian, Belarusian, and Kazakh origin.

In March 2022, Russia set an export quota for the EAEU member states, taking into account their volumes of domestic consumption. The volume of quota for wood and timber exports from Kyrgyzstan is 29,680 cubic meters.
