BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 26. Kyrgyzstan's electricity generation increased in the period from January through June 2023, Trend reports.
As per the data provided by the State Statistical Committee of the country, a total of 7.583 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated in Kyrgyzstan from January through June 2023. This is 13.8 percent more than in the corresponding months of 2022 (6.661 billion kilowatt-hours).
In June 2023, the domestic power stations produced 1.096 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 3.3 percent less than in June (1.133 billion kilowatt-hours) of the previous year.
Meanwhile, on July 24, 2023, Kyrgyzstan declared a state of emergency in the energy sector to address the challenges related to climate change, low water inflow in the Naryn river basin, and a shortage of generating capacities amid rapidly increasing energy consumption.
A respective decree, "On the State of Emergency in the Energy Sector of the Kyrgyz Republic," was signed by President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov. It will come into effect on August 1, 2023, and will be in place until December 31, 2026.
It is expected that the declaration of a state of emergency will facilitate the development of strategies and actions to address the current issue of electricity shortages and maintain a sustainable energy system in the future.
According to the State Statistical Committee of the country, Kyrgyzstan imported 1.516 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through May 2023, which is 4.7 percent less (1.590 billion kilowatt-hours) than in the corresponding months of 2022.
