BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, March 28. Russia will assist Kyrgyzstan in the rehabilitation of territories affected by uranium mining activities, Trend reports.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, an agreement has been signed between the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and the Government of Russia. The agreement follows negotiations between the Minister of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, Major General Boobek Azhikeev, and Alexei Likhachev, the CEO of the Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom, during the ATOMEXPO-2024 forum in Sochi, Russia.

The aim of the agreement is to protect the population living in areas where tailings repositories are located and to reduce the risk of emergencies.

Russia plans to allocate 2.141 million Russian rubles ($23,144) to Kyrgyzstan for the reclamation of tailings repositories. The agreement includes exemptions from taxes and other payments for the work carried out in the territory of Kyrgyzstan.

Additionally, the signed agreement aims to improve the environmental situation and the efficient use of territories, contribute to the socio-economic development of settlements left after the liquidation of enterprises producing uranium products, and further expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Russia in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy.
