State Joint Stock Company Uzbekenergo will implement two major projects in Tashkent and Tolimarjon thermal power plants in early 2013, due to modernization and introduction of energy saving technologies, the company's management told Trend on Friday.
As previously reported, the major projects for the modernization of Tolimarjon TPP, worth $1.28 million, will include construction of two combined cycle power plants of 450 MW each. The construction of 500 kV Talimardjan TPP substation Sogdiana and a new 500 kV substation for Tolimarjon TPP is being carried out. The capacity of thermal power plants will increase to 1.6 thousand MW power output - up to 9.8 billion kilowatt-hours.
A 370 MW gas turbine will be built during the modernization of Tashkent TPP and is worth $511,859 million.
Uzbekenergo and Slovak Synecta Holding a.s signed an agreement on the implementation of projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) of TPPs.
Currently, the projects are being tested and may be registered in the relevant UN agencies in early 2013.
It is assumed that greenhouse CO2 emissions will be reduced by 1.543 million tons per year. Tolimarjon TPP reduction alone was 1.300 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year during the modernization of stations.
The average price reduction of CO2 emissions is, according to Uzbekenergo, about 10 euros per ton. The proceeds of the funds will be used to cover costs associated with the reconstruction of power plants.
In the frame of the agreement Synecta will deal with monetization of emissions reductions and provide consulting services for the registration of the project at the United Nations in accordance with the requirements of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.
For 10 years, Synecta will buy certified emission reduction units resulting from the modernization of stations to be sold on the international market.
To date, the UN registered 11 CDM projects from Uzbekistan with total planned emission reductions of 4.402 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
