The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) representative office in Uzbekistan in 2020 transferred five tons of chickpea seeds and 500 kilograms of mung bean seeds to farmers in the Kamashi district of the Kashkadarya region and the Bukhara district of the Bukhara region in order to improve seed production, Trend reports citing the office.

FAO's expert on drought risk management Aziz Nurbekov said that legumes play an important role in addressing poverty and food insecurity, protecting human health and nutrition, soil and environmental health and, as a consequence, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and implementation of the FAO’s Hand in Hand Initiatives.

It was also noted that legumes are essential crops for a variety of reasons.

“They are rich in nutrients, making them an ideal source of protein, especially in regions where meat and dairy products are not physically or economically available,” FAO's expert noted.

In addition, legumes are an important crop for farmers, because they can be produced both for sale and for their own consumption.

“The ability to eat and sell the legumes they grow helps farmers maintain food security in their households and creates economic stability,” FAO's expert explained.
