TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, November 16. Uzbekistan exported 16,700 tons of grapes for a total of $11.1 million in October 2023, Trend reports.
The recorded volume is 39 percent lower than in September 2023 and 3.3 times less than in October last year.
The main reason for the unusually high grape prices in Uzbekistan this harvest season was the diminished yield caused by frost damage in January. Unusually cold weather conditions in January 2023 had a considerable impact on the grape crop.
Meanwhile, the volume of exports of grapes from Uzbekistan amounted to 27,300 tons in September 2023, which reflects a 30 percent decrease compared to 38,900 tons exported in the previous month and a sharp decrease of 2.2 times compared to 59,000 tons exported in the same period of 2022.
Currently, 18,900 hectares of land are used for grape plantations on all agricultural farms in the Tashkent region. Uzbekistan plans to create plantations on another 20,000 hectares in the Bekabad, Parkent, Yangiyul, Zangiata, Akhangaran, Tashkent, Kibray, and Urtachirchik districts of the Tashkent region from 2024 through 2025.
Thus, the total area of grape plantations in the region will reach 38,000 hectares, which will increase the yield by three times and amount to 500,000 tons.
In total, since the beginning of the current export season lasting from June through October of 2023, 99,800 tons of Uzbek grapes have been shipped to foreign markets for a total of $63.7 million, which is 41 percent less in physical terms than in the same period last year.
