The PACE has adopted resolution on Iran. The came after discussions over report on Situation in Iran at the morning session on June 25.

The parliamentarians who addressed the session condemned events that took place in Iran on June 13. They said the major concerns are related to situation of human rights and use of force and violence against peaceful demonstrators. The speakers emphasized importance of the Council of Europe and Europe's role in ensuring Iran's happy future, democracy and fundamental freedoms.

The resolution says the events that took place following June 12 elections marked the largest event since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

"Opposition supporters demanded to cancel vote's results in demonstrations staged after the presidential elections held on June 12. But authorities used force and arrested hundreds of people and imposed a ban on freedom of expression. This arouses concerns," the resolution said.

"The only peaceful and long-term solution to the current situation in Iran and establishing stability and peace in the region is democracy and respect for human rights and legal state principles. PACE is ready to launch constructive dialogue between Iranian parliament and opposition as well as representatives of civil society," the resolution said.

PACE urged Iranian authorities not to use force against peaceful demonstrators, to release the arrested people including political and public figures, to lift restrictions for media freedom and  to prevent opposition press from being closed to stop punishing foreign journalists and expelling them from the country.

The PACE also urged Iran to provide condition to investigate election irregularities independently, to establish constructive dialogue in country's political life, to provide a positive response to new U.S. administration's new approach and to establish dialogue with international community to ensure atmosphere of mutual trust. "Iran should choose the way of dialogue," the resolution said.

The PACE also called on PACE observer states to enhance ties with Iran and establish deep political dialogue.

The resolution was adopted with two amendments.
