Iran rejects reports of enrichment halt

The Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has dismissed reports that Iran has temporarily halted its uranium enrichment activities.

"In spite of attempts and provocations ... by some top intelligence officials of one of the Western countries, the nuclear activities of Iran are successfully going on without any interruption under the IAEA [supervision] for peaceful purposes," Ali Asghar Soltanieh told a Press TV correspondent in Vienna.

Soltanieh said reports that Iran's computer systems had been affected by a virus is incorrect, describing it as "another speculation by Western diplomats" aimed at creating confusion.

A report by IAEA Director General Yukia Amano presented to the Board of Governors on November 23 said inspectors found that Iran has made a brief halt in its uranium enrichment activities.

The IAEA Board of Governors has convened for its regular winter session, during which the Agency will discuss, among other issues, the latest report on Iran's nuclear program.

The report, which is to be discussed by the end of the week, once again confirms the non-diversion of declared nuclear material in Iran.

It, however, calls on Tehran to suspend all uranium enrichment activities and implement the additional protocol, which is not binding.

Iran, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), says it has fulfilled all its commitments defined within the framework of the IAEA and NPT, insisting that its cooperation with the body has been over and above its legal obligations.

Tehran had voluntarily implemented the Additional Protocol for two and a half years, but suspended the "goodwill" effort after the UN Security Council "interfered" in the country's nuclear program.
