EU countries’ FMs to take new sanctions against people associated with Iranian gov’t
Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 30 / Trend S.Isayev/
Foreign Ministers of the EU countries will take new sanctions against 179 individuals and institutions associated with the Iranian authorities, RIA Novosti quoted French Foreign Ministry communiqué.
The intentions to impose additional sanctions came to notice after a report by the IAEA on Iran's nuclear program. It stated that Iran used to carry out work on nuclear weapons development until 2003, and these very activities could still go on today.
The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution on November 18, calling on Iran to open access to the agency's experts to nuclear sites and insisting on greater cooperation between Iran and the Agency.
"EU ministers will adopt sanctions against 179 individuals and institutions associated with the Iranian government," the communiqué said. "They will also discuss other opportunities to strengthen the sanctions, in particular, the proposals of the president [French President Nicolas Sarkozy], on freezing assets of the Iranian Central Bank and the ban on imports of Iranian oil."
